Camp Lejeune Water Contamination: What You Need to Know.

From 1953 to 1987, water at Camp Lejeune in North Carolina was contaminated with volatile organic compounds (VOCs), including known carcinogens at up to 280 times the standard safety level. More than 70 toxins have been identified, including chloroethylene (TCE), tetrachloroethylene (PCE), vinyl chloride (VC), and benzene. Anyone who drank, cooked, cleaned, or bathed in this water between 1953 and 1987 is at risk for various cancers, Parkinson's disease, stillbirths, infertility, miscarriages, and more.

In January 2017, the Obama administration established a disability claims process through the VA to provide disability compensation for eight medical conditions connected with Camp Lejeune's contaminated water. Two levels of benefits were made available solely through the VA: presumptive benefits and compensation for family members’ out-of-pocket costs.

Once it becomes law, the PACT Act will prohibit the U.S. government from asserting specific immunity as a defense to any Camp Lejeune lawsuit. Veterans, family members, caretakers, and civilians poisoned while living and working at Camp Lejeune between January 1, 1953, and December 31, 1987, will finally be able to pursue redress through the courts. The right to file a lawsuit will also extend to the primary caretakers of poisoned, including spouses and children of individuals directly exposed.
